3 reasons why self care is critical to success

Drivers who partner with Uber enjoy the benefit of working wherever and whenever—and for however long you want. And of course, the more you work, the more you can earn.

That’s a great thing if you have amibitious financial goals, since your earning potential is virtually unlimited. But there’s also a downside to being totally in control of how much money you can make.

It’s tempting for many people to work harder to earn more, to the point of harming their own health and well-being. And sometimes it’s hard to take a step back and make time to take care of yourself—but taking care of yourself is absolutely critical for the sustainability of your work and your long-term success.

Not convinced? Consider these three reasons why self care is critical to your success:

You Can Do Better Work

People who take the extra time to put their own needs ahead of everything else—including work—are better positioned to excelwhen they perform. If you feel overwhelmed because you can’t imagine where you’ll find the time to fit in one more thing to take care of, don’t worry.

Putting your own needs first can be as simple as making sure you’ve drank enough water today. It can also mean taking a few minutes before leaving your house to pack healthy snacks instead of hitting a drive-thru when you’re on the road.

And in this case, doing better work means providing a safer service since you’re operating a motor vehicle on behalf of your riders. Taking care of basic needs and making sure you’re well-rested, hydrated, comfortable, and alert can make the experience safer for anyone riding with you. It also enhances your own safety, since you’re more likely able to spot and avoid potentially dangerous situations before they develop.

You Can Avoid Burnout

If you’re entrepreneurial-minded and determined to work hard to be successful, you may be prone to pushing yourself too far. It’s not easy to take time off and get adequate rest, especially when you’re so motivated and driven.

But if you fail to make your downtime a priority, you risk burning out. This can take weeks or even months to recover, which means much more lost time than if you just took the periodic breaks you need each week.

Taking care of yourself is one of the best way to avoid burning out. And keeping a steady, consistent pace means you make more progress over the long run. Success with your work is a marathon—not a sprint.

You Can Cultivate a Better Mindset and Attitude

Your thoughts have tremendous power. When you choose to think positively, you can see more solutions and opportunities to challenges or problems. Thinking negatively will only close your mind to different possibilities.

And the way you act can influence others. If you choose to be happy, you can positively impact your riders and anyone else you encounter during your day. Happiness is contagious, but so are things like misery, worry, and stress.

Choose what you want to share with the people in your day wisely. It makes a difference.

How Can You Take Care of Yourself?

There’s not a single right answer because your needs will be different from someone else’s. But here are a few great places to start making an effort to prioritize self care:

  • Get eight hours of sleep each night
  • Try meditation or journaling to relieve stress and organize your thoughts
  • Practice gratitude
  • Engage in random (or planned!) acts of kindness
  • Exercise
  • Eat whole foods and avoid processed products

Self care is a necessary step on the path to success. Make sure you incorporate good self care habits into your life so you can achieve the success that’s important to you.
