Aloha, and welcome to Hilo! Located on the windward or “wet side” of the Big Island is the charming town of Hilo. A stroll through Hilo’s historic bayfront will take you back in time to “Old Hawaii” where things happen a little slower and locals exude the Aloha spirit. From black sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, and active volcanoes, check out #WhereTo visit in Hilo:

If you’re feeling outdoorsy…

  • Akaka Falls State ParkNorth of Hilo, along the Hamakua coast is one of Hawaii’s most magnificent waterfalls. After a short hike through lush rainforest and greenery, get rewarded with a view of this 420 ft (130m) tall waterfall.
  • Mauna Kea: Located just northwest of Hilo, this is one of the highest peaks in Hawaii soaring almost 14,000 ft (4,200m) above sea level. Be sure to bring warm clothes as the temperature at the summit can be cold enough for snow to accumulate during the winter months.
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National ParkHome to the world’s most active volcano, Kilauea has been erupting continuously for over 30 years. Explore steam vents, lava formations, and even enjoy food and drinks while overlooking the Kilauea caldera from inside the famous Jaggar Museum.
  • Rainbow Falls: Only a few minutes from bayfront Hilo is a picturesque 80 ft (20m) tall waterfall known as Rainbow Falls. This water is easy to get to and is a favorite for both locals and tourists alike.

If you want to do some shopping…

  • The Locavore Store: Centrally located in Hilo town, this indoor produce market features locally produced goods including meats, coffee, tea, and gifts.
  • Hilo Farmers Market: Find your perfect souvenir at this twice-a-week outdoor market with over 200 vendors selling produce, artisanal foods, and crafts.
  • Sig Zane Designs: This is one of Hilo bayfront’s most popular shops. You can find one of a kind, handmade and stylish aloha wear from men’s shirts to women’s sundresses.
  • Big Island Candies: Sample some locally made chocolates, shortbread cookies and so much more at this gourmet candy store. There’s even a window to watch them make everything by hand.

If you need a cold one…

  • Hilo Town Tavern: Enjoy bites and cocktails at this indoor/outdoor spot while winding down to the sound of live local bands.
  • Mehana Brewery: One of Hawaii’s largest independent craft brewers, try local favorites like ‘Volcano Red Ale’ or ‘Tsunami IPA.’

If you want to try some island fuel…

  • Cafe Pesto – Hilo: A local mainstay, Cafe Pesto originated as a takeout pizzeria and has evolved into an award-winning eatery.
  • Hilo Bay Cafe: Enjoy contemporary, locally-inspired dishes at Hilo Bay Cafe with a beautiful view of Hilo Bay to match.
  • Moon and Turtle: A seafood restaurant featuring a frequently changing international menu. We recommend trying the smoked sashimi.
  • Wiki FRESH: One of Hilo’s newest restaurants, you can enjoy delicious local favorites with a tropical fusion flair. This popular island hangout is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat that’s not only affordable but also mouthwatering.
  • Ken’s House of Pancakes: A trip to Hilo isn’t complete without a stop at Ken’s House of Pancakes. Enjoy local favorites and don’t forget to check out the wall of celebrities who frequent this local gem.
