Commercial drivers have special insurance coverages with varying minimum amounts required by their home licensing commission.
For example, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) in New York City requires commercial drivers to obtain insurance with limits of:
- $100,000 to cover injuries to one person in an accident;
- $300,000 to cover injuries to all people involved in an accident; and
- $50,000 to cover damage to property
Insurance is required and varies under local law. Commercial drivers must show proof of this insurance to their affiliated licensor before they are allowed to drive. Commercial drivers are required to maintain their own insurance, and as such, Uber does not maintain insurance for these drivers. Insurance requirements for commercial drivers differ from those required to be maintained for transportation network drivers.
