Tanta is one of the leading cities of the Nile Delta, with a wealth founded on the cotton industry. Ahmad Al-Badawi Mosque
Born in Fez, Morocco, Ahmad al-Badawi studied in Mecca, Medina, and Iraq before coming to Tanta at the age of 40. After founding the Badawiyya Sufi order, he devoted the rest of his life to teaching Islam throughout the Nile Delta. Since his death in 675 AH/1277 AD, this magnificent three-domed mosque holding 20,000 worshippers has grown up around his tomb.

Sabil El-Ahmadi
The public fountain near Ahmad Al-Badawi Mosque was built by the great-great-grandson: Abbas Helmi II Mohamed Ali and is considered a treasure of Islamic architecture. The marble walls are decorated with windows highlighted in brass.

Mawlid el-Badawi
The largest mawlid in Egypt is held every October in the week around the birthday of Ahmad al-Badawi. Millions of people gather for spiritual meetings, prayers, and Sufi dancing. There is also a carnival and Tanta’s famed Meshabbik sweets.
Meshabbik
The Mawlid al-Badawi has made Tanta famous for its sweets but you don’t have to come in October to find them. Meshabbik are a particular specialty and street vendors make them on the spot. The best place to see them is on El Sekka El Hadid street.
El Khan Street
Famous for its Halawet al-Mawlid, this picturesque market street is also a center for shops selling cotton clothes, scarves, perfume and other traditional goods.
Tanta Museum of Antiquities
Now being renovated, this museum has four floors of exhibitions, taking visitors from the days of the Pharaohs through to the present Islamic period of history.

Tanta University
Right at the heart of the city, the university has some 136,000 students who add vibrancy to Tanta’s cultural life, as well as helping support many excellent restaurants.

Tanta Cultural Centre
The majestic former Tanta Theatre is now Egypt’s newest Cultural Centre, serving Gharbeya and the wider Delta Region. It supports everything from folklore and Arabic music to poetry and opera.
Andalos Park, AMRO Abn al Aas
Old Railway Station
The railway line between Cairo and Alexandria opened in 1854, 15 years before the Suez Canal. The grandeur of this building reminds us how important that first modern transport link between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean was.

One of several shopping malls in Tanta, Orouba is centered on a Carrefour hypermarket but has another 100 retailers, from fashionwear and bookshops to food outlets such as KFC and Cinnabon.
