Since launching in March 2013, Uber has connected tens of thousands of Detroiters with high-quality, luxury transportation at the touch of a button. We know Detroit riders love getting around in style. But sometimes, you just want Uber reliability and convenience at a lower cost.  Well, Detroit, we’d like to introduce you to uberX: Motor City’s new low-cost Uber option that’s better, faster and cheaper than a taxi.

When Uber fan and Detroit Piston Kyle Singler heard uberX was arriving in Detroit, he tapped his app and caught the first uberX ride in Detroit to the Palace to kick off the season!

Singler knows the importance of a convenient, comfortable ride to get him to the season opener on time — and at a reasonable price! Being uberX Rider Zero pumped Kyle up to help the Piston’s start the season with a win!

uberX with ridesharing: a clear match for Motor City

Detroit is focused on job creation, service delivery and economic opportunity. The Uber app – and new, cheaper uberX – complements the work underway in Detroit by facilitating even more affordable, reliable rides for tens of thousands of Detroiters. That same technology simultaneously expands economic opportunity for hundreds of Detroit drivers, including both professional chauffers and now everyday fellow Detroiters through ridesharing.

The benefits of ridesharing are numerous. Ridesharing makes more efficient use of the existing cars in a city – which ultimately means fewer cars on the road, helping ease the traffic and environmental strains of owning your own vehicle. Detroiters who have a few extra hours on their hands, whether they be students, stay at home parents, or part-time workers, can use their own vehicle to earn extra money to help pay the bills. Most importantly, it offers city residents another great way to get around.

We are proud to be a part of this time of rebuilding in Detroit’s history and are committed to expanding the Uber team, Uber options and partner-driver network in Michigan, finding new ways to deploy innovation to meet Detroit’s transportation needs throughout the metro area.

Want to be an uberX driver partner? Learn how here.

As always, there are no fees for extra passengers, stops, or luggage, and with Uber, there’s no need to tip!

How do I get an uberX?

  • Open up your Uber app and you’ll find two options along the bottom: uberX and Black
  • Toggle over to uberX to give it a try, because it’s free through November!
  • Set your pickup location and tap the “Request uberX” button.

How are uberX partners screened?

We’re committed to maintaining the high quality you’ve come to expect when using the Uber app. In Detroit, uberX partner drivers include both licensed limousine companies driving non-luxury vehicles, and everyday people, providing rides by driving their own cars, in what’s called ridesharing. Uber has a rigorous screening process for ridesharing including:

  • Stringent background check
  • Driving history check
  • In-person interview & screening
  • On-going quality controls
  • Vehicle inspection

All Uber rides are additionally backed by Uber’s corporate insurance policy, and riders have the option to rate their driver after every trip and continually improve the system with their feedback.

Let us know how the first ride goes by sending us a tweet @Uber_Det or shooting us an email at supportdetroit@uber.com.
