Vehicle requirements in Canada
Which car is right for you? Make sure it meets Uber car requirements in your city and remember that you’ll make more money if you keep your costs low.
Your vehicle must-haves
To drive with Uber in Calgary, your vehicle must meet these minimum requirements:
- A 4-door vehicle with independently opening doors
- 5 seatbelts
- 10 years or newer
- No salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
- No commercial branding
- No rental vehicles
- Pass a vehicle inspection
Registration
You must have a Class 1-55 Vehicle Registration to drive with Uber.
Please note: Class 1-55 Vehicle Registration does not provide Uber drivers with the same privileges as a taxi.
Insurance
Alberta has approved an insurance policy from Intact Insurance designed specifically for rideshare drivers. You can see our policy here. All drivers are also required to maintain a personal insurance policy. We recommend you speak with your provider to discuss ride sharing. For a ride-share friendly insurance quote, please visit www.uber.aon.ca.
Your name must be visible on the insurance pink slip. If you’re the secondary driver, you must show proof of the policy document with your name on it.

UberX
The most popular vehicle option for riders.
Vehicle's model year must be 10 years or newer to qualify to drive with UberX.
UberXL
Seat extra passengers—and earn higher fares—with your high-capacity vehicle.
Vehicle's model year must be 10 years or newer. Most SUVs qualify to drive with UberXL.
Premier
Premium rides with highly rated drivers.
Additional requirements:
- Have a minimum star rating of 4.85 based on 250 completed trips
- Drive an eligible luxury vehicle with a leather interior that is 5 years old or newer
Uber Comfort
Uber Comfort was designed to maximize possibilities on the Uber platform.
Requirements
- Maintaining eligibility on a different Uber option such as Uber Black, Uber Black SUV, UberX, or UberXL
- Having a minimum star rating of 4.85 and have completed at least 100 trips
- Driving a vehicle with more legroom than smaller, compact cars eligible for UberX and that meet the minimum vehicle year requirement

- What's a Class 1-55?
A Class 1-55 Vehicle Registration is a type of registration distributed by the province to those providing ride for hire services.
Please note: Class 1-55 Vehicle Registration does not provide Uber driver-partners with the same privileges as a taxi.
- Where can I get one?

- What's the wait time for a new registration?

- Is switching my registration expensive?

- Can I keep my old licence plate?
Down Small You'll need to update the licence plate on your vehicle to match your new registration, but, you may keep the old licence plate. The cost of a new licence plate is included in the registration cost.
- What does a Class 1-55 look like?
Down Small A Class 1-55 is almost identical to other Alberta vehicle registrations, with only a few key differences: a number '1' in SECTION 1 under CLASS, and the word 'Livery' under TYPE OF OPERATION.
