Summer in Toronto makes the winters almost worth it. Even so, the heat can, and does, get a little overwhelming at times. Just because it’s the sunny, outdoors season doesn’t mean you can’t find a great deal of fun indoors. Check out this list of some of the best activities to escape the heat and have a good time in Toronto.

This Toronto museum boasts an impressive 80,000 piece collection of works dating from the first century all the way up to modern-day art. Aside from the numerous exhibitions, you can attend art parties or catch lectures and talks given by illustrious art professionals and artists.

Is photography your preferred art medium? If so, this converted warehouse focused on showcasing modern talent is right up your alley. They’ve recently acquired thousands of images from the New York Times Photo Archive. Feature exhibitions include Scotiabank Photography Award: Suzy Lake; Max Dean: As Yet Untitled; and Souvenir: Kent Monkman, Caroline Monnet, Jeff Barnaby, and Michelle Latimer. If you’re in a more academic kick, the RIC’s Peter Higdon Research Centre has opportunities for scholarly pursuits spanning the field of photography.

The Royal Ontario Museum is Canada’s largest natural history museum. Its focuses are also in exhibitions that portray world culture and art. Current highlights exhibitions include the Blue Whale, Anishinaabeg: Art & Power, The Family Camera, and Galleries of Africa: Egypt.

Toronto has the privilege of being the home of Ripley’s Aquarium, the largest public aquarium in Canada. Their galleries offer you a glimpse at all kinds of exotic aquatic species and wildlife. From the Dangerous Lagoon exhibition to the Discovery Centre, this family-friendly educational outing is rife with colourful sights, majestic sea creatures, and fun events like their twice-a-month jazz nights.

Mirvish Production operates perhaps some of the best-known theatres in the Toronto entertainment scene. Of their 4 venues, only the Ed Mirvish Theatre box office is currently open. Whether you’re in the mood for film or plays, the theatre has plenty of options for you. This season’s highlight is Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

If you like bowling, then you’re in for a real treat with The Ballroom Bowl. Get ready for sports in their massive 10-lane facilities, live music, a rooftop patio to take in some fresh air, as well as a delightful pub experience. The live entertainment consists of band performances on Wednesdays and Thursdays and DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays.

This charming café is a must if you fancy tasty snacks, a variety of hot beverages, and a friendly atmosphere to get your board game extravaganza on. Gather with friends and enjoy one of the many games the keep on their game library, which is constantly updated with the latest in board game releases.

There’s nothing stopping you from getting in some exercise by yourself or with friends and family at a climbing gym. Boulderz Climbing Centre specialises in bouldering routes and offers programmes that are accessible to newcomers as well as climbing veterans. If you’re arriving with kids in tow, their specialty children’s climbing walls is sure to be a thrill.
