We sat down with Richie, Senior Strategy & Operations Manager in the Uber Eats Marketplace team, to learn more about why he chose to relocate to Taiwan and what his experience has been like since making the move.

“My decision to relocate to Taiwan from Singapore was driven by a blend of personal and professional motivations. Prior to making the move, I had visited three times and found the people really welcoming and friendly, even though I spoke very little Mandarin. Taiwan offers both bustling city life and serene nature escapes which are easy to visit thanks to Taiwan’s convenient public transport. The cost of living also allows for a higher quality of life, and on top of that, the local healthcare system is excellent.

From a professional standpoint, Taiwan has a vibrant and dynamic tech industry that offers opportunities for career growth and innovation, especially for someone in my field. It’s home to some of the world’s leading tech companies, startups, and entrepreneurs, making it easy to network and connect with peers of similar backgrounds. “Taiwan actually has a rather simple and seamless immigration and visa process for expats. Taiwan has a Gold Card visa program, which is very easy to apply for, provided that you meet the application requirements. Once this visa is granted, you can work for any company in Taiwan. The application process was a breeze for my wife and I and only took one day to fill out the application! The whole process took less than one month.

Integrating into life in Taiwan was easier than expected, as I initially thought there would be a language barrier. People here in Taiwan are very kind and helpful and I’m happy that most restaurants here in Taipei have an English menu so I still haven’t experienced ordering something wrong (yet!). Getting around Taiwan is also easy with very connected public transport and easily accessible public bikes. Overall, the quality of life here is very good. Taiwan consistently ranks highly in global quality of life indices due to the excellent healthcare system, low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and high standard of living.”

“Uber’s support was one of the reasons why I decided to move to Taiwan. Uber offered relocation support which allowed me to easily bring my family with me. There is also a local destination support provider who helps with things like opening a bank account, getting a mobile phone plan, and looking for a place to live. 

I also have several teammates who are also expats so they shared their relocation experiences with me and there’s always someone at work to recommend new things and places to try and visit. Even though I am a foreigner, I’ve never felt like an outsider as the team always makes sure I’m involved by speaking in English, inviting me to go out, etc.”

“The working culture here in Taiwan is very dynamic and offers good work-life balance.
