Born and raised in Detroit, Aini Robertson joined our UberSTAR intern program in 2019 while at the University of Michigan before joining Uber as a full-time Software Engineer. “My UberSTAR mentors and managers were my biggest advocates. They wanted me to learn and challenge myself but also supported me with whatever I needed. Whether it’s further explanation or more resources, they were always there to ensure I had what I needed to succeed,” she shares below.
Tell us about yourself.
“I was born and raised in Detroit, MI before moving to Ann Arbor to pursue a Computer Science degree from the University of Michigan. My hobbies include reading, dancing, traveling, and spending time with my dog Milo.”
What did your journey to Uber Engineering look like?
“I started as an UberSTAR intern in 2019 then returned as a Software Engineer through the traditional internship program for 2 more years before accepting my full time offer.”
Tell us about your experience with the Uber STAR Program as an intern.
“I loved UberSTAR! I was a member of the first cohort and it really allowed me to form a community within a field of work that can be intimidating and challenging. A lot of us still keep in contact with each other.”
How did your UberSTAR Mentor and Manager prepare you to succeed within Uber Engineering?

Why did you make the decision to accept a Full-time offer after your internship?
“I accepted my offer because I like Uber’s core values and I feel like I have room for growth. Whether it’s a new team, project, or role Uber supports growth.”
What can you share about your current Engineering work/team?
“I currently work on a Data Engineering team which is very interesting. I’m in a dual role integrating into data engineering while still maintaining my software engineering projects. I own 1 backend service and 2 frontend services.”
What role do you play or hope to play for the UberSTAR Program today or in the future?
“I hope to be an immediate resource for all UberSTAR interns. Whether it’s a quick chat for project help, advice, or volunteering at an event I’m always here happy to give back!”

“Take advantage of all opportunities and get to know your peers in the cohort.”
