Not even the briefest of visits to Split is complete if you haven’t walked down the city’s promenade (1). The construction of waterfront promenade started some 200 years ago, while Split was still under Napoleon’s rule. Since then, it has been the focal point of the city’s social life.
Perhaps the city’s most important site is the Diocletian’s Palace (2), world’s best preserved Roman architectural monument. Built in the 4th century, the palace was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979.
Make sure you climb the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius (3), the oldest building among Europe’s cathedrals. The 57-meter bell tower was built in the 13th century and the view from the top is absolutely spectacular.
If you want to go on a short trip, we recommend visiting the Klis Fortress (4), a medieval fortress situated above a village of the same name and a key stronghold during the Ottoman invasion.
Less than 30 kilometers from Split lies Trogir (5), a town boasting an urban tradition of more than 2,000 years and a stunning historic center that has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
