When an opportunity to relocate with Uber came knocking, Pierre Delanoue jumped at the chance to move from Paris to Amsterdam: “Uber’s tech environment in Amsterdam offers dream working conditions, worthy of a big tech company in Silicon Valley while being in the heart of Europe.”
Talk to us about your Uber journey.
“I started at Uber summer 2020 and have progressed from a Data Analyst Intern, to a Data Analyst for Community Operations in Paris, and now a Product Data Scientist in Amsterdam.
It was during my internship as a Data Analyst that I was convinced that Uber could be a place to fulfill my professional aspirations. I love mathematics and I was looking for a job where I could continue to learn while making a concrete impact.
When I saw my friends and family using some of the tools I had worked on during my internship, I was even more convinced of how lucky I was to be working on an application used by so many people.
On the Paris Community Operations team, I worked to improve the quality of our customer support and user safety for Western and Southern Europe. I loved working with our teams in Paris, Lisbon, Berlin, and Madrid. On the data science side, I worked on a range of topics, such as automating our customer support, forecasting, proactive support, and setting up an experimentation framework.
In the last 6 months, I have been a Data Scientist for the Amsterdam Payment Product team working on improving the physical cash payment experience. This time, the products I work on are used worldwide, which is thrilling. I also have the chance to work with smart colleagues whose passion for excellence inspires me every day.
I feel lucky to have been able to develop my data science skills both on operational topics and now product challenges. In Operations, I learned to make good decisions quickly to help the business grow while finding solutions to users’ most urgent needs. In Product, I’m focused on being creative and using innovative methods to improve the user experience. Having worked in both Operations and Product has given me a better understanding of how a global technology company works.”
What motivated you to relocate from Paris to Amsterdam, and how did you adapt to the new environment?
“The combination of the professional opportunity and the city.
In Amsterdam, Uber has a large product team, Money Hub, that enables payments worldwide. There is a significant presence of multiple teams—Engineers, Product Managers, Designers and Data Scientists.”
Uber’s tech environment in Amsterdam offers dream working conditions worthy of a big tech company in Silicon Valley while being in the heart of Europe. As a Data Scientist, I feel like I am having work experience in San Francisco while still being close to my family. Amsterdam is also a fantastic city with an exceptional quality of life.
What are you enjoying most about life in Amsterdam?
“I am totally in love with this city. Amsterdam is a beautiful, safe, and dynamic city on a human scale that is full of activities and resources.
It’s a real pleasure for me to ride my bike every day in such optimal conditions. It’s a very expat-friendly city full of cultural possibilities, nice people, good bakeries, and with a great nightlife!
Being at the center of Europe is also very advantageous to make trips and weekends easily in cool cities. I feel very lucky to be able to call Amsterdam my home.”
Relocation can be daunting. How did Uber support you in this journey and what was your experience?
“The Uber office in Amsterdam has hundreds of employees and many are expats from all around the world. My colleagues have been a resource that has significantly facilitated my relocation to find a place to live, to provide all kinds of information, and most importantly to make friends! There is a great and joyful atmosphere here. I love to meet people with different backgrounds and experiences.
All in all, my relocation was a much easier experience than I thought. Moreover, Uber offers a relocation package to help us financially and administratively in our relocation. For example, someone helped me to do my tax in the Netherlands which was extremely appreciable for me. ”
Any advice for someone considering relocating for work?
“If you are curious about it, you should do it. Working abroad can truly be a rich adventure worth trying. Working in a country is the best way to create a special relationship with a new culture that you wouldn’t have with tourist trips. It is also a great way to learn to discover new aspects of yourself and meet a lot of new people.
Working abroad is a rich experience full of adventure that also requires patience to learn how to build a new life. Not everything can be done in a few weeks, so it is important to give yourself time. My advice is to be well organized, patient with yourself, and above all enjoy every new experience and opportunity!”
Go-to Amsterdam Uber Eats order?
“In Paris without any hesitation, it’s Mapitom. I still have so many more Uber Eats orders to try in Amsterdam but recently I am kind of addicted to Phu Thai Thai Take Away.”
