“I was reminded of this everyday when I was surrounded with the intelligent, respectful and courteous people of Uber, doing the work that is helping bring technology to a traditionally tech deprived sector of Freight. Having the freedom to work on anything I enjoyed working on, and having enough responsibility to make an impact on people’s lives made it a fulfilling experience. Even now as I join Uber Routing, I can see how the work we do everyday affects the experience of all Uber users worldwide.   

Despite it being the summer of remote internship, it’s apparent my team prepared me to not just be back and join them, but to succeed wherever I went from there.” 

Name one thing you learned as an Uber intern.

“As an Uber intern, I was part of a team that was big enough to be effective, and small enough such that every member was indispensable. I learned that with this kind of work comes huge responsibility, and I enjoyed that.”

“Before my internship, I was under the impression that interns only work on toy projects or prototypes that are “nice to have” without real production impacts. However, this was not my internship experience at Uber at all. I was given the opportunity to work on a project that was estimated to save the company a significant amount annually. I constantly collaborated with Product Managers, Data Scientists and other Software Engineers to achieve the same goal. It was then I knew joining Uber was the right decision; I knew my work at Uber could make an impact.” 

Name one thing you learned as an Uber intern.

“Engineering is not always about making the perfect solution. Sometimes it is about spending minimum effort and time to achieve business needs. Don’t over-engineer products.”

“They say that interning is a ~12 week interview for both you and your employer — you see the company trying to show you their best and likewise. However, I never had a magic ‘wow, I better be coming back here’ moment during my internship. Rather, interning and now working at Uber has been one of those experiences where every day, as much as the last, I am floored by the respect and warmth of the people and the quality and innovativeness of the work. People here really care about you and your growth. Moreover, from my internship working on Uber’s past self driving projects to now working on the Uber Eats platform, there are so many exciting opportunities to affect real people’s experiences in the macro, and you don’t have to wait until you’re one step away from the CEO to make changes in a big way.”

“Code and tech needs to work, but, even as an Engineer, at the end of the day your relationships and communication with those you work with are the most important part of your job.”

“I knew it was the right decision to join Uber when I learned about the impact of my internship projects. My manager gave me the opportunity to work on projects that were not only interesting to me and relevant to my career, but also highly impactful for Uber. I had (and continue to have) the opportunity to pursue my passions while making a positive difference, both within the company as well as in the world around me. It was reaffirmed that my choice to join Uber was the right one when I was offered a full time position. Nearly everyone with whom I had worked reached out to congratulate me and offered to meet with me to answer any questions. Joining Uber as an intern and then again as a full time employee were both some of the greatest decisions I’ve ever had the opportunity to make.”

“The key to making an impact is an ability to explain your work and document it so that anyone can look back and understand it. Effective communication is the secret ingredient that enables you to move from doing analyses to impacting the business with your analyses.”
