With some of the world’s most passionate Uber Eats customers, one of the most reliable and highly rated Uber rides globally and the top satisfaction scores globally for their support agents, Uber Taiwan is the place to be for global talent looking for growth opportunities to build their careers.
“New joiners frequently tell me they are impressed with how smart their team members are,” shares Chai Lee, our General Manager (GM) of Uber Eats. “Those we bring on board are here because they truly want to come and solve hard problems. They want to make an impact on our customers and partners, and that’s exactly what they can do here.”
Chai leads Uber Eats in Taiwan alongside Rita Peker, GM of Uber for our rides side of the business. We sat down with Chai and Rita to find out what they’re looking for in people who want to join Uber and what life’s like as a GM at Uber Taiwan.
Why should people join Uber Taiwan?
Chai: “I joined Uber Eats because I saw that we were on the precipice of revolutionizing the food and beverage industry, and I wanted to be a part of making that history in Taiwan. It was the first time the digitalization of the industry was happening, and I wanted to be at the forefront of that, which still excites me to this day. There is still so much opportunity to make our mark and you can be a part of that.”
Rita: “Getting to work with the smartest (and curious and kind!) people on some of the hardest and complex problems is what I love about working at Uber. At Uber’s scale, there is always something interesting to work on, and across our business there are so many smart people who all bring their unique perspectives to the problem at hand.”
Any advice for people looking to join Uber Taiwan?
Chai: “At Uber Taiwan, the team truly understands what it means to Build with heart and Go get it, which are two of our favorite Uber values. We also have a strong desire to make a positive impact on the communities in which we serve. If these values resonate with you, please share with us how you have lived them through your experiences.”
Rita: “Ask questions, listen actively, know your numbers, share your boldest ideas, pitch for impact, embrace (fast-moving) change, and take the work seriously, but not yourself.”
Since joining Uber, how has your role evolved?
Chai: “While I’ve been in the same GM role for Uber Eats since I joined almost 6 years ago, my role has evolved from being the GM of a small start-up to the GM of a large, scaled and impactful business. In the earlier stages, it was about being very agile, leveraging quick decision making, and in general lots of hustle and firefighting. As the business scaled, we began to focus more on business and people strategy, and harnessing regional and global resources in order to build towards longer-term growth.”
Rita: “In the 6 years I have been at Uber, I’ve had roles in operations and marketing across both Uber and Uber Eats. While my roles have progressively become more global in scope, and the businesses have become more complex with a broader product offering, ultimately I think the work itself is simply evolutionary.”
Tell us about your role today. What does your day-to-day look like?
Chai: “There is no typical day in my role but it’s generally a balancing act between strategy and execution, short-term and long-term decision making, as well as engaging internal and external stakeholders. I carve out focus time on Mondays and Fridays to think about the business, and I take meetings the rest of the week.
Despite how busy things can get as a working mom, I leave in the afternoon a couple of times a week to pick up my kids from preschool and daycare. My husband and I aspire to do this for our kids since it’s important to them as they grow up, and we have dedicated family time in the evenings before the cycle repeats! I’ve been very impressed with how supportive Uber is of working moms. Even as a GM, I was able to take generous parental leave when each of my children were born, and I have flexibility in my day-to-day to balance both work and my caregiving duties.”
Rita: “There’s also no such thing as a typical day in my role, but broadly I’m either spending time on today’s people or work, or building and expanding for our future. Every step up in seniority has increased the amount of time I spend on people-related activity; from one-on-one development and mentoring to resource planning or ways of working, this rightfully takes up a big chunk of my week. “The work” covers all the day-to-day collaboration with the local team to progress or optimize current and upcoming priorities. And “building” is all about what needs to be done, internally and externally, to grow our rides business in Taiwan, whilst “expanding” refers to the time I / we spend learning, sharing, and jamming on shared topics with my global counterparts. It’s really fun to work in an international company with colleagues all over the world who are equally motivated to solve similar problems!”
What is the most interesting challenge you need to solve right now?
Chai: “One of Uber’s global company priorities for 2024 is “Uber, Everyday”. My aspiration is for Taiwanese consumers to love our service and product selection so much that they use Uber Eats everyday. I’m excited to work on strategies that make us even more reliable, affordable, and diverse in our selection, which I believe are key ingredients towards becoming a daily use case.”
Rita: “How we give people more safe and affordable ways to move from point A to B and make cities easier for those people to move around, whilst reducing congestion and carbon emissions, and at the same time continuing to ensure the Uber platform is a reliable way to earn. Getting that equation right and balancing all those things provides for a bunch of new challenges everyday.”
