Meet Eli Gonzalez, our National and Strategic Accounts Lead responsible for enterprise commercial relationships for Uber Eats in Mexico. She’s also a proud mom of two. Below, Eli shares her tips for aspiring businesswomen, how Uber’s flexible working environment is a key to her success, and how she makes being a working mom work.
Tell us a little about yourself.
“I’m from Hermosillo, Sonora. I studied Marketing at Monterrey Tech in Monterrey. I am the only woman in a family of five siblings. I’ve married and have two children: Pato, who’s 8, and Andrés, who’s 5.”
What’s it like to be at Uber and a mom of 2?
“My daily challenge is to balance my professional development, supporting my team, and my role as a parent. Uber has been a great place to learn and a huge catalyst for achieving work-life balance. And, on especially complicated days, Uber’s philosophy and values are a great support to continue working toward my dreams.”
What surprised you when you first joined Uber?
“My first day, I swear I thought I was dreaming. There I was, at a company with a philosophy and values that perfectly fit mine, and where the human quality and empathy of my leader and team made me feel even better. ”
Why join Uber today?
“For me, the most important thing about a company, in addition to its culture, is its leaders. At Uber, I’ve found empathetic and flexible leaders who, whether they are parents or not, understand the importance of that aspect of people’s lives. It is a company that seeks results, that goes without saying, but it also has a clear commitment to the importance of work-life balance for the success and productivity of its people.”
Tell us about the flexibility you experience at Uber as a working mom.
“I’ve had flexible bosses before, but being at a flexible company makes all the difference. The flexibility I have experienced ranges from the ability to manage my own schedule (around events or other school activities), to days when I need to work from home (when the children are sick), to being able to take time off when my children need me (for doctor’s appointments), or even being able to stay late at the office to get ahead on certain issues so that I can spend a full day with my children a day or two later.”
Which of Uber’s values resonates with you the most?
“Several of Uber’s values click with me and my philosophy of life but Go Get It is one I identified with even before I was at Uber. Identifying opportunities, looking for creative solutions, and challenging the status quo are some of the traits that I would say define me.”
Any advice for women who aspire to be business leaders?
“Have patience, resilience, and a positive attitude. We are at a time where the work environment has evolved a lot, but there are still many barriers to overcome. Fortunately, positive changes are still taking place, and every day more women are becoming professionals, with the opportunities and tools to grow in the business world.”
Any advice for people who want to be both parents and leaders?
“I would advise them to view it as a new challenge, a great experience, and the best training you can have as a person and, certainly, as a professional. Of course, there will be frustrating moments, but if you really like what you’re doing and you’re clear about your priorities, recognize the importance of the path and enjoy it.”
Any other details you’d like to add?
“Feeling empowered and owning my results have contributed to a climate of trust with company leaders and with Uber that has allowed me to achieve a positive work-life balance. It’s not easy. Some days are more difficult than others, but if you’re passionate about what you do, you can adapt easily.”
