Ugandans are ranked amongst the happiest people in Africa – and that face never seems truer than on Easter weekend in Uganda. So, when it comes to celebrating this holiday, Kampala is one of the best places to be. If you haven’t already made plans for Easter, we’ve come up with some ways for you to join in the fun and enjoy the weekend with family and friends in Kampala.
In the city
On Easter weekend itself, you, of course, have to attend an Easter morning service with family at one of the city’s many cathedrals or churches. Namirembe Cathedral and Rubaga Cathedral always have some of the largest services, as well as the most impressive parades afterwards. However, if you don’t want to stick around for the Passion play and procession, there are plenty of other things to do for a family Easter in and around Kampala.
A daytrip around town
Request an UberX to head out on a daytrip to one of Kampala’s top city spots, or go “Easter shopping” in one of the city’s popular malls. Whether it’s Acacia Mall, the Oasis Mall or Garden City Kampala, there’s few things more fun than a family shopping trip: trying on new clothes, browsing for a new phone or computer, and don’t forget the all-important Easter lunch in the middle. If you decide to go shopping at the Acacia Mall, going to see a film at the cinema is always an option as well.
Head for the beach
After heading to church, everyone in Kampala either seems to head to the street – but why not head to the beach? With Uber available from Kampala to Entebbe, there are many beaches you can ride directly to with Uber on Easter weekend: you can visit Lutembe Beach at the outer reaches of Murchison Bay or head right to Lido Beach and Imperial Resort beach on the edge of Lake Victoria. Then, what else is there to do but party? Go swimming, pack a picnic and simply enjoy some beachside fun – there’s sure to be a lively atmosphere once the beach starts to fill up.
Start the festivities early
If you’re not going to be around Kampala on the Easter weekend, you can get a head start on the holiday with the Easter Carnival at the Kariba Country Club on April 13th. The carnival contains a delicatessen – the place to pick up an impromptu picnic – an artisan market with over 50 vendors offering food and artisan crafts, as well as music and entertainment from a live band for a fun-filled family day out. Of course, the festival will also feature plenty of fun for kids, including face painting, egg painting, an egg treasure hunt, a playground, jumping castles, swings and more.
Stretch your body and mind
For a truly different Easter, you might have to travel some way out of town. If you can get there, the Easter Weekend Yoga Retreat at Lake Bunyonyi promises a truly special and unique holiday experience. Take some time out to destress and connect with nature on the serene shores of West Uganda’s Lake Bunyonyi. You’ll also have the opportunity to go canoeing on the lake and hiking in the surrounding mountain side, before enjoying a traditional Batwa festival for a special lakeside Easter celebration.
So, whether you’re sticking with the traditional celebrations in Kampala city center or riding in and around town to enjoy the weekend with family, Uber is available to help every step of the way this Easter. Happy Easter!
