Imagine swapping your daily commute for a new country, a fresh culture, and an exciting job at Uber. Career moves like Richie Sison’s leap from Singapore to Taiwan aren’t just about climbing the ladder—they’re about embracing adventure and innovation. Discover why Richie and many others around the world are making bold moves to join Uber in Taiwan.
We sat down with Richie, Senior Strategy & Operations Manager in the Uber Eats Marketplace team, to learn more about why he chose to relocate to Taiwan and what his experience has been like since making the move.
What made you decide to relocate to Taiwan?
“My decision to relocate to Taiwan from Singapore was driven by a blend of personal and professional motivations. Prior to making the move, I had visited three times and found the people really welcoming and friendly, even though I spoke very little Mandarin. Taiwan offers both bustling city life and serene nature escapes which are easy to visit thanks to Taiwan’s convenient public transport. The cost of living also allows for a higher quality of life, and on top of that, the local healthcare system is excellent.
From a professional standpoint, Taiwan has a vibrant and dynamic tech industry that offers opportunities for career growth and innovation, especially for someone in my field. It’s home to some of the world’s leading tech companies, startups, and entrepreneurs, making it easy to network and connect with peers of similar backgrounds. Local conditions also present their own set of opportunities and challenges, providing learnings, experiences, and skills that you might not get elsewhere. It’s perfect for professionals seeking a new adventure at work and outside of work!”
Why Uber Taiwan?
“Uber’s vast global presence and ability to connect people and places on such a large scale is what got me interested. Being part of a company that makes a big and tangible impact on communities and transforms the way people move is incredibly rewarding.
On top of this, the workplace environment and culture was another reason I joined Uber. As early as my interview process, I witnessed Uber’s dedication to diversity and inclusion and how it creates a vibrant and supportive work environment. This was the kind of environment that I wanted, where diverse perspectives are valued and encouraged. And last but not least, career growth and opportunities. Many Uber employees take on international roles, have stretch assignments, or venture into new functions and teams so I could see lots of opportunities for professional development and career advancement.”
How was the process of moving to Taiwan? Did you integrate and adjust smoothly?
“Taiwan actually has a rather simple and seamless immigration and visa process for expats. Taiwan has a Gold Card visa program, which is very easy to apply for, provided that you meet the application requirements. Once this visa is granted, you can work for any company in Taiwan. The application process was a breeze for my wife and I and only took one day to fill out the application! The whole process took less than one month.
Integrating into life in Taiwan was easier than expected, as I initially thought there would be a language barrier. People here in Taiwan are very kind and helpful and I’m happy that most restaurants here in Taipei have an English menu so I still haven’t experienced ordering something wrong (yet!). Getting around Taiwan is also easy with very connected public transport and easily accessible public bikes. Overall, the quality of life here is very good. Taiwan consistently ranks highly in global quality of life indices due to the excellent healthcare system, low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and high standard of living.”
How did Uber help you adjust to life in Taiwan?
“Uber’s support was one of the reasons why I decided to move to Taiwan. Uber offered relocation support which allowed me to easily bring my family with me. There is also a local destination support provider who helps with things like opening a bank account, getting a mobile phone plan, and looking for a place to live.
I also have several teammates who are also expats so they shared their relocation experiences with me and there’s always someone at work to recommend new things and places to try and visit. Even though I am a foreigner, I’ve never felt like an outsider as the team always makes sure I’m involved by speaking in English, inviting me to go out, etc.”
Can you tell us more about the work environment? What’s it like to work in Taiwan?
“The working culture here in Taiwan is very dynamic and offers good work-life balance. At Uber Taiwan, we are able to work remotely for a certain number of days each year and the office space is also very conducive for work. There’s a strong culture of teamwork and innovation and the work we do has a significant impact on how people move around cities and communities. Working for Uber allows me to contribute to creating safer, more efficient, and more accessible transportation options for millions of people.”
What advice do you have for people who are interested in making the move to Taiwan?
“Go for it or as we say at Uber, Go get it. On top of Taiwan consistently ranking high in global quality of life indices, it’s not difficult at all to move to Taiwan and settle in as people are generally very kind and helpful. Embrace new experiences, be willing to try new things, and allow yourself to grow personally and professionally.”
