Easter 2019 is coming up and our big cities are getting ready to help keep you busy and entertained over the holiday weekend. This year’s Easter celebrations take place from 19 April – 22 April, which means that there’s no better excuse than to head outside and soak in the Autumn weather with loved ones.
Don’t let travel arrangements get in the way of enjoying the Easter weekend, as Uber makes it easy to get around town for a stress-free Easter holiday. No plans as yet? We’re here to lend a bit in inspiration on the spectacular line-up of Easter activities taking place in your city!
Head to the Rand Show in Joburg
Gauteng residents are probably already looking forward to this one: the wildly popular Rand Show in Johannesburg celebrates its 125th birthday this year. It’s an absolute must on the city’s annual calendar of events, taking place from April 19th – 28th. There will be literally something for everyone to enjoy at this convention featuring almost everything: from cooking and talent shows to fitness expos, military displays and even gaming and cosplay events. The list goes on and on – it might just be easier to check out their lineup yourself!
Join Africa’s biggest Easter Egg hunt in Durban
uShaka Marine World in Durban, a spectacular complex comprising, amongst others, the world’s fifth largest aquarium, is the site of Africa’s biggest Easter Egg hunt this year. Over 100 000 chocolate treats will be hidden throughout the complex and each treasure hunter is to be issued with a hunting map. Your kids will love you for this as their tickets also include entrance to the Wet ’n Wild waterpark inside the complex featuring all kinds of exhilarating slides and water adventures, as well as the awesome Sea World aquarium itself.
An alternative Easter at Lusito Land
If the traditional celebrations leave you wanting more this Easter, then why not try something with a little more spice? The Lusito Land Festival is also returning to Johannesburg for Easter weekend, celebrating the best of Portuguese culture. Featuring a variety of live music performances, four huge sit-down restaurants for Portuguese cuisine and an amusement park among other attractions and activities, it promises to be a giant weekend of entertainment, whether you’re coming with friends or family.
If you need to get the whole family out there, the Uber Family Profile can help you transport everyone to the event conveniently and quickly, rather than taking multiple trips in the family cars.
Jog along the ocean
The Two Ocean’s Marathon, the Mother City’s epic ultra-marathon of 56km, returns again this year on April 20th of the Easter weekend. Winding along the Cape Peninsula in a breath-taking course with endless sea-views, it attracts tens of thousands of athletes, spectators and supporters annually. For those who would rather give the 56km a miss, there’s a family day as well as pre-race activities to take part it on Good Friday before the main event. You can also join in one of the other distance races, such as the 21km half-marathon or the 5km or 2km fun-runs if you’re really set on taking part.
Enjoy a Starlit Cinema in Cape Town
Once you’ve rested up from the marathon, whether you competed, took part in a fun run or just cheered on a friend really hard, take your friends and family to the Galileo Open Air Cinema in Newlands on April 21st. That way you can spend Easter Sunday in the most relaxing way: enjoying a fabulous picnic and family-friendly Easter activities such as face-painting, interactive games and a visit from the Easter Bunny before settling in on a comfortable cushion or blanket for the movie under the stars.
Of course, you should remember the reason why Easter is celebrated. If you’d like to do something more spiritual, you can always request a ride for you and your loved ones to attend a special Easter church service anywhere in South Africa.
There’s a huge number and variety of activities and events nationwide to ensure a memorable weekend break this Easter. Take advantage of the fine weather and Uber in South Africa to ensure your Easter weekend is the best it can be.
