At Uber, the Safety Engineering team is at the forefront of using advanced technologies to ensure a safer experience across all our platforms. Our focus includes maintaining Catalog Safety, ensuring that restricted or prohibited items are accurately identified, and enhancing food safety standards. We leverage real-time telematics, motion sensing technologies, machine learning algorithms, and user-facing mobile products to prevent and reduce unsafe behaviors on the platform. Our work spans across Uber’s ecosystem, impacting everything from rides to delivery and other emerging markets.

About the Role

As a Senior Data Scientist on our Safety Data Science team based in São Paulo, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing tools that enhance the safety of our catalog, particularly around restricted and prohibited items and food safety. You’ll work on building and refining models that identify and manage these safety concerns, ensuring they are continuously evaluated and improved. This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about applying data science to real-world safety challenges and enjoys working closely with non-technical stakeholders, especially in Operations.

What You’ll Do

  • Master Catalog Safety Data: Analyze and interpret data related to restricted/prohibited items and food safety, ensuring that our safety tools are both effective and compliant with regulations.
  • Lead Development of Safety Tools: Develop and lead projects focused on creating and improving safety tools that use statistical and machine learning techniques to monitor and manage safety risks in our catalog.
  • Continuous Evaluation and Improvement: Design, build, and continuously evaluate models that identify prohibited items or safety concerns, ensuring they remain effective over time. Establish standardized processes for ongoing model assessment and improvement.
  • Collaborate with Operations: Work closely with Operations teams to ensure that safety tools and models are effectively implemented, understood, and utilized across global markets.
  • Drive Governance and Process Improvements: Take an active role in defining governance processes and improving the overall safety infrastructure related to catalog safety and food safety.

What You’ll Need

  • Experience: 5-10 years in Data Science and Data Analysis, with a strong foundation in A/B testing and statistical methodologies.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in SQL is essential; experience with Python, and familiarity with big data tools like Spark, Hive, and stream processing is highly desirable.
  • Operations Mindset: A deep understanding of operations, especially in relation to catalog safety and food safety, is crucial for this role.
  • Stakeholder Management: Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with non-technical stakeholders, particularly in Operations.
  • Passion: A strong passion for safety, particularly in ensuring the integrity and safety of items in Uber’s catalog, and making a real-world impact through innovation.
