Director, Communications, UK
About the Team
Uber launched in the UK in 2012. Today, it is one of our most strategic and forward leaning markets globally with well over 5 million regular ‘riders’ (passengers), over 63,000 restaurants and merchants, operating in approximately 470 towns and cities across every nation and region of the UK which, according to independent analysis, created £5bn in economic value for the UK economy in 2022.
The Communications team in the UK is responsible for telling the story of how Uber is changing the way people, food, and things move around cities. Working with the media, our own social channels and third parties, we explain the benefits of ridesharing and e-hailing for riders, drivers and cities and bring to life the ways Uber Eats is providing new opportunities for merchants and consumers through instant access to local commerce.
To do that well, we build lasting relationships with the key news outlets and journalists across the UK. And we work with marketing colleagues to amplify our storytelling, and the public policy team to make the positive case for reform.
About the Role
We are looking for someone to lead our Communications efforts across the UK, based in London. You will manage a small team of communication professionals and partner with the UK leadership team across our Mobility and Delivery businesses.
What You’ll Do
- Help craft the voice of Uber in the UK, one of our most exciting, and innovative markets globally. You will be responsible for defining how Uber drives the conversation in the region, working in partnership with the rest of the UK Leadership Team to define our strategy.
- Make sure the Communication team acts as a true partner to the business, supporting our goals in the UK where we are seeing continued fast growth, new areas of business (Boats, Electric Vehicles, Train) in an ever more competitive environment.
- Partner with the Marketing team to build and maintain our brand and reputation; with the Policy team on external advocacy campaigns; and with the Safety team on our proactive initiatives and incident response.
- Attract, develop and retain a high-caliber communications team by fostering a supportive and collaborative atmosphere that enables everyone to do their best work.
- Manage relationships with external vendors like PR agencies
- Coach communications practices and strategy across the UK with regional colleagues.
- Be a trusted and thoughtful member of the UK leadership team, advising on all aspects of our external communications.
- Be passionate about doing comms at Uber, where we get to shape the conversation around the future of mobility and delivery.
What You’ll Need
- 10+ years of communication experience in consumer facing businesses with a proven track record of managing complex communications and issues management - either for a company, a third party or in government.
- 3+ years of experience leading a communications team.
- Must bring experience as a spokesperson, with strong media relations know-how and expertise.
- Ideally, a combination of working in a globally matrixed organization and fast-moving smaller ventures.
- Proficiency in English is essential.
Leadership and Capabilities
- A self starter: Uber is a company of entrepreneurs and we want to work with people who enjoy building things from the bottom up too. Stuff changes fast in our world so you’ll need to be highly adaptable as well as calm under pressure
- A great advocate: We’re looking for people who can distill complex ideas into simple, honest and compelling communications backed up by intellectually credible arguments. You’ll need to write well and have the creative ability to tell stories—about our product, culture, people and the ways we’re helping to improve life for users, earners and cities.
- A strong influencer: We succeed by building effective relationships, and using those relationships to enable the best possible outcome for the Uber brand. You’ll have a bias for action in everything you do—and a willingness to engage in debates with a track record of making data-driven decisions.
- A team player: Success at Uber depends on the ability to organize different teams (internally and externally) around shared goals. It’s why we’re looking for well organized people who enjoy working with others to get stuff done—and who can deal with the ambiguity that sometimes comes from working cross-functionally.
Characteristics
- Embodies and promotes the values of Uber
- A strong communicator comfortable at ease both in the front lines and in the boardroom
- Able to see the forest and the trees, knowing the details that matter
