Senior Counsel, Privacy & Cybersecurity Legal

Uber's Privacy and Cybersecurity Legal team is a diverse group of global professionals who provide data privacy and security legal solutions by accounting for ethics, laws, business risks, and growth opportunities. We live by our mission statement to drive Uber’s efforts to be a trusted steward of our users’ personal data in every market where Uber operates. This position is focused on our cybersecurity legal practice and will report to the Chief Privacy Officer.
About the role
Uber is changing the world, and we’re looking for an exceptional Senior Counsel,
Privacy & Cybersecurity to advise a diverse group of global clients on domestic and international cybersecurity and privacy legal issues, including managing the legalities of incident preparedness and response.
What you'll do
- Advise and support the CISO organization on all cybersecurity legal needs.
- Represent a diverse group of global clients on domestic and international legal issues related to cybersecurity and privacy.
- Collaborate with other colleagues to manage privacy and cybersecurity incident preparedness, investigation, communication, and remediation.
- Research and track global cybersecurity and privacy legislation, evolving regulations, and enforcement trends and translate that into practical, effective advice.
- Assist business and engineering teams on incorporating privacy- and security-by-design into Uber's technologies and embracing innovative privacy and cybersecurity solutions from inception to end-of-life.
- Support M&A due diligence and integration.
- Drive cybersecurity awareness and compliance by creating and presenting engaging training content.
- Further develop Uber’s legal notices, policies, contract language and playbooks, and other materials supporting Uber’s privacy and cybersecurity programs.
- Negotiate contracts with key business customers.
- Participate in group projects, including team-building and wellness.
- Contribute to our ongoing mission to make magic in the marketplace, and drive Uber’s efforts to be a trusted steward of our users’ personal data in every market where Uber operates.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of eight years (8) years of legal experience in private practice, in-house and/or government.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience within privacy and/or cybersecurity law.
- Solid understanding of international cybersecurity and privacy laws, particularly in the US and EU.
- Ability to work flexible hours: The role requires flexibility with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities as needed for timely response to critical incidents.
- J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
Preferred Qualifications
- Six (6) years experience within privacy and/or cybersecurity law.
- CIPP certification preferred.
- In-house legal experience preferred, particularly in connection with technology platforms.
- Self-motivation with a strong affinity for strategic problem solving and driving action.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues.
- Consistent good judgment and ability to apply legal knowledge to help create practical business solutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills, highly collaborative with business leaders and cross-functional partners, and a strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others.

For Chicago, IL-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$209,000 per year - USD$232,500 per year.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.
For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$209,000 per year - USD$232,500 per year.
For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.
