Principal Engineer - Core Advertising

About the Role

As a Principal Engineer on the Uber Ads team, you will set and lead strategic technical initiatives across the entire ads ecosystem, with a special emphasis in ads allocation, pricing, and measurement.

The fast growing advertising business at Uber is a core contributor to helping Uber's mission in reimagining how people move. We create value for all participants in our vibrant marketplace - riders, eaters, drivers, merchants, brands, and Uber -- with full funnel advertising product and technology solutions. Principal Engineers represent the top 2% of our engineering talent, and you will be the senior-most engineer in this growing team.

The Principal Engineer for Core Advertising at Uber will be the senior-most engineer responsible for overseeing all advertising technology within the company. This pivotal role covers various advertising products, each at different levels of maturity.

The team is geographically distributed across multiple locations. The new hire will collaborate closely with these teams and report directly to the Core Ads leader. This position will be the top technical advisor for advertising and driving the technical vision and strategy for Uber's ad platforms.

The ideal candidate will be primarily a back-end distributed systems engineer with significant experience in building large-scale systems. They will possess a strong understanding of machine learning (ML) and the ability to work with applied scientists, data scientists, auction theorists, and economists to make real-time trade-offs in a multi-participant marketplace.

This role includes unlocking new business opportunities, unifying fragmented ad platforms, improving efficiency, and building core adtech domain expertise. Notably, This position offers a unique opportunity to drive innovation and growth in Uber's advertising technology landscape.

  • Understand, investigate, and formulate technical roadmaps for the highest priority opportunities/problems for advertising at Uber
  • Consistently write and document high-quality code and technical papers to solve strategically important problems
  • Partner with and influence key stakeholders to drive technical progress, and evangelize the adoption of Ad Tech industry best practices
  • Mentor and guide technical leads in executing high-priority OKRs, define and improve SLAs, and establish metrics and success indicators

---- Basic Qualifications ----

  • 15 years of experience working as a software engineer or 13 years with an advanced degree.
  • Deeply experienced in building core ad tech systems such as ad servers, bidders and pacers, yield optimizers, reach estimation systems, etc.
  • Proven track record of delivering high impact business outcomes within the digital advertising domain

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

  • An advanced degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or quantitative field
  • Experience with forecasting models for inventory management, enabling sales operations and enabling both reservation and auction based buying models
  • Experience with full funnel ad measurement and attribution systems, such as brand lifts, incrementality based measures, modeled conversions, MMPs, CAPI, SAN, etc.
  • Familiarity with the sales tooling and third party integrations that enable the flow of budgets from advertiser ecosystems into 1st party platforms

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$284,000 per year - USD$315,500 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$284,000 per year - USD$315,500 per year.
