About the Role

Uber invests heavily in better customer experience with refunds and appeasements as part of our mission to keep Riders, Drivers, Couriers, and Eaters happy and safe. The Customer Obsession team is now tasked with building a new platform (Sentinel) to centralize all refund and appeasement transactions across Uber to enhance this customer experience. This ambitious initiative will bring complex challenges: ensuring consistent logging, preventing fraud, enforcing policy compliance, and leveraging data to optimize refunds—all while providing real-time insights to drive better decision-making to improve operational efficiency and in turn better experience.

As the Engineering Leader, you’ll take on the challenge of leading a team of full-stack engineers to build high-quality, scalable systems from the ground up. You’ll be navigating across teams, aligning stakeholders, and driving major migrations—all in a fast-paced environment where scalability, reliability, and precision are critical. The role will require deep technical expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams across time zones to ensure alignment and successful delivery.

This is a unique opportunity to tackle the technical and organizational complexity of building a foundational platform that will have a lasting impact across Uber.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field
  2. Experience setting roadmap and goals for the engineering team and leading engineering projects from planning through review stages.
  3. Experience consulting with key partners, maximizing engineering resources, using measurable metrics and/or KPIs, and collating technical artifacts to make key engineering decisions.
  4. Experience ensuring delivery by allocating engineering talent effectively to achieve engineering deliverables, empowering engineers, and maintaining productivity.
  5. Experience hiring, team building, performance management, mentorship, and employee development.
  6. Experience advocating engineering best practices and driving engineering excellence within their team and organization
  7. 3-4+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

  1. Professional industry exposure to and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:
  2. Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  3. Expertise in driving data strategy, and delivering high-impact solutions.
  4. Experience in building and scaling risk detection and mitigation systems, with a focus on fraud prevention and security.
  5. Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  6. Exposure to or experience with:
    1. Product engineering
    2. Scalability engineering
    3. Distributed systems

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$218,000 per year - USD$242,000 per year.
