We consider ourselves extremely lucky to partner with a remarkable and diverse network of drivers across the state of Georgia. To show our appreciation, we sent Josh the Uber Elf down to Savannah to help spread some holiday cheer!

MEET ERIC

Eric

How long have you been driving with Uber? How often do you drive?

I’ve been driving full-time with Uber since August. I’m also a full-time customer service professional in the hospitality industry. [With Uber] I only do the bar crowd, I take care of my drunks. When you’re in a college town, especially with SCAD being here and having a lot of international students, knowing Savannah, knowing the history of Savannah, helps the students understand why Savannah’s set up the way it is. It helps them know the city better so that they can respect the city more.

What do you love about driving with Uber?

Well 1) I’m never late to work! And 2) I’m a customer service person, so I like meeting new people. And the connections I’ve made doing Uber have helped me quite a bit – it helped me get another job! I picked up a passenger, and we got to talking and I found out he was in the hotel industry. So I told him how I’d been in the hotel industry for five years now, and he goes, “Really?” It turns out he owns a hotel out by the airport. So I got to talking to him about customer service and he goes, “You should come apply.” And so I went in, actually met him with my resume and everything, and got the job on the spot.

You get to know the city a lot better, too. I just moved down here about a year and a half ago, so being able to drive the city and know what these places are, I’m able to relay, “Hey, have you been to the Olde Pink House?” I’m able to help the community out a little by saying, “Here’s a little gem that the tourists don’t know about, but the locals know about.”

To use your own words, what is your favorite hidden Savannah gem?

I would have to say the Crystal Parlor. The Crystal Parlor is a bar/dinner area, it’s down off the beaten path, it’s been there for God knows how long, and they have I think over a hundred draught beers. [laughs] And when you’re in a town that likes to drink…

How long have you been driving with Uber? How often do you drive?

I started back in October, and I just was testing it out to see the ins and outs and see if it was something that I really wanted to do, and it’s definitely beneficial. I can definitely say that. Whenever I’m in school [at Georgia Southern University] I drive on the weekends, and then I try to get a couple days in whenever I’m not in classes.

What is your favorite part about driving with Uber?

My favorite part of being an Uber driver is making sure people can get home safely. I drive late at night because I feel like a lot of people are inebriated at that time, so they need rides. Especially when a lot of people might have been drinking or just don’t have a ride, I feel like it’s good to be able to have that reliable source, to know someone can pick you up and get you home safely.

What are your plans for the holidays while you’re home for break?

I’m going to some relatives’ house later on today, and then will probably celebrate Christmas at my mom’s house tomorrow, and then probably Uber!

MEET LASCELLES

How long have you been driving with Uber? How did you first hear about Uber?

I’ve been driving with Uber since June, about six months. I love it. The first time I saw Uber was on Facebook, but it was as a rider. So I downloaded the rider app, but then a friend of mine sent me a request to be a driver. It was funny because she hadn’t even driven yet, I think she drove maybe two or three times before she sent me it. So I’ve been doing it ever since. I do it part-time, and I teach also. I teach “Introduction to Computers” to adults ages 18 to 60.

Why do you drive with Uber?

I have three boys, and I Uber to have extra money to spend on them – especially this month! Tomorrow Santa’s going to come and visit them, and then I’m going to take them to Jamaica on the 28th.

What is your favorite part about driving with Uber?

The freedom. That’s the best part, the freedom. It’s like, I can be at home, sitting on the couch, watching TV, and driving. There’s not somebody constantly, “Hey man, you gotta come and punch the clock.” And then, the people you meet. Sometimes you meet some incredible people and sometimes you meet some people like “Oh my gosh, I can’t wait to get you out of my car.” The drunk ones, they’re not the worst. They’re fun! But some of them it’s like, “Dude, somebody should have cut you off a long time ago.”

How long have you lived in Savannah, and what do you love about it?

I’ve been in the area for about 10 years. I was in the military, I retired in 2010, and then I moved to the Savannah area in 2010. But I lived in Ft. Stewart since 2006. My favorite thing about Savannah is my kids live here. If it wasn’t for that, I’d probably be somewhere in Florida – I’m originally from Jamaica, so I like to be warm. I love the warm weather.
