Director, Engineering - Aarhus Site Lead
About the Role
The European Site Leader for Core Infrastructure at Uber will act as the strategic and operational leader for a critical engineering hub, overseeing teams responsible for building and maintaining Uber's stateful, stateless, and batch infrastructure, along with the deployment engine. This role is pivotal in ensuring the robustness, scalability, and efficiency of Uber's global technology platform while fostering innovation, collaboration, and operational excellence within the region. The site comprises 100+ engineers across diverse subdomains, making this role essential for driving alignment with global priorities and empowering regional autonomy.
What You’ll Do
Leadership and Strategy:
- Define and Execute Vision: Establish and communicate a clear vision for the European Core Infrastructure team that aligns with Uber’s global infrastructure objectives and regional strengths.
- Strategic Roadmap: Collaborate with global infrastructure leadership to develop and execute a roadmap that ensures Uber’s core infrastructure scales with business needs.
- Regional Representation: Act as the face of Uber’s infrastructure in Europe, bridging the gap between regional engineering teams and global leadership to ensure representation in strategic decisions.
- Thought Leadership: Stay ahead of industry trends, ensuring the European site adopts best practices in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and deployment strategies.
Operational Excellence:
Infrastructure Domains: Oversee the development, maintenance, and innovation of:
- Stateful Systems: Databases, messaging queues, and other persistent storage solutions.
- Stateless Systems: Compute and service platforms, ensuring reliability and performance.
- Batch Processing: Data pipelines, analytics platforms, and job orchestration frameworks.
- Deployment Engine: Tools and pipelines for seamless code deployment and versioning.
SLAs and Reliability: Ensure infrastructure services meet strict SLAs for availability, performance, and scalability.
- Incident Management: Champion site reliability engineering (SRE) principles to minimize downtime and mitigate risks during incidents.
People Leadership and Development:
- Site Management: Directly lead and inspire engineering managers and senior technical leaders, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and innovation.
- Talent Growth: Hire, mentor, and retain top engineering talent in Europe, ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion across teams.
- Career Development: Establish clear growth paths for engineers, aligning personal development goals with team and company objectives.
- Cultural Stewardship: Create an inclusive, high-trust engineering culture that emphasizes collaboration across teams and geographies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Global Alignment: Collaborate closely with other infrastructure sites and teams in the US, India, and other regions to ensure seamless integration of efforts and consistency of standards.
- Partner Engagement: Work with product, data science, and operations teams to ensure infrastructure priorities meet Uber’s business needs.
- Dependencies Management: Actively manage dependencies and risks between Core Infrastructure teams and other engineering verticals.
Governance and Metrics:
- Performance Monitoring: Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for infrastructure reliability, scalability, cost efficiency, and team productivity.
- Budget Ownership: Oversee regional budgets for infrastructure investments, including hardware, software, and cloud expenditures.
- Compliance: Ensure infrastructure complies with regional regulatory and security requirements, such as GDPR and other European standards.
Key Challenges and Opportunities:
- Global-Regional Balance: Maintain alignment with Uber’s global infrastructure strategy while providing the European site with the autonomy to innovate and tailor solutions for local needs.
- Complex Ecosystem: Manage the intricate dependencies between stateful, stateless, batch, and deployment systems, ensuring all components work seamlessly together.
- Talent Market: Compete for top engineering talent in a highly competitive European tech ecosystem while fostering a strong local brand presence.
- Operational Scale: Lead the site through periods of rapid growth and scaling, ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with Uber’s business expansion.
What You’ll Need
- 15+ years in software engineering
- 8+ years of leadership experience, including managing large-scale infrastructure teams.
Bonus Points If
- Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of distributed systems, cloud platforms, stateful and stateless architectures, batch processing frameworks, and deployment pipelines.
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead large, diverse engineering organizations and navigate the complexities of a global technology ecosystem.
- Collaboration: Exceptional cross-functional communication skills, with experience working across geographies and time zones.
- Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical and organizational challenges in high-pressure environments.
